Hopefully we all know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Unfortunately we all either know someone who has had, is a survivor of, is currently battling, or has succumbed to Breast Cancer. Although there have been many advancements in early detection, understanding of the disease, possible prevention, information, and many forms of lifesaving treatments and holistic integrative therapies, we still do not have a real "cure" for Breast Cancer. The latest statistics (although I do not like stats and we all know the many problems with how they are identified) say that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. This is sad and scary in itself, thinking that 2 of the women I work with (or me myself) will someday be diagnosed with Breast Cancer. We are fortunate to live in a community that has a strong Cancer support community www.cancerfamilynetwork.org, and www.thewellnesscommunity.org
and a wonderful Cancer Center located right here at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital with many avenues for treatment and information. Being in the Spa industry and having the goal of promoting healthy lifestyles I find the correlation between our environmental toxicity and the occurance of Cancer very intriguing and undeniable. I am going to be reading LIVING DOWNSTREAM; An ecologist looks at Cancer and the environment by Sandra Steingraber. If you have not read the book you can read a review at http://www.pmac.net/downstrm.htm and maybe we can enjoy reading the book together.
During the month of October, Canyon River Spa will be donating 5% of the proceeds of our Aromatherapy Rose products and our Rose Spa services to the Susan G. Komen foundation for Cancer Research. It's our small way of recognizing the problem and showing our support to finding a CURE. Enjoy the beautiful fall season and stay strong in your positive thoughts and actions!
